Ulcer Treatment in Houston: 4 Common Remedies

Ulcer treatment in Houston is essential to maintaining gastroenterological health. Peptic ulcers develop on the inner lining of the stomach, and about 10 percent of Americans will suffer from an ulcer at some point in their lifetime.

There are a variety of effective ulcer treatments that can alleviate the pain caused by peptic ulcers, remove ulcers from the stomach, and ultimately prevent their recurrence. The following five tips are generally believed to be the best course of action in treating ulcers.

1. Antibiotics:

Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) is a bacteria caused by a stomach infection that may be responsible for peptic ulcer condition. Physicians typically use a combination of antibiotics to treat H. Pylori because one medication alone typically will not kill the organism.

Some of the medications a physician might prescribe include amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole. Typical treatment duration is two weeks, depending upon the severity of your ulcer condition. Please consult a trained physician for a specific treatment plan.

2. Acid Blockers:

Acid blockers, also known as histamine blockers, alleviate ulcer pain and promote healing by reducing the amount of hydrochloric acid released into the digestive tract.

Available both over-the-counter and by prescription, some common acid blockers include Zantac, Pepcid, Tagament, and Axid. Make sure to follow instructions on all medications and to consult a physician if the problem persists.

3. Antacids:

As part of your treatment plan, your physician may include an antacid in order to provide rapid pain relief. Antacids are typically more for short-term relief, and should not be taken for an extended period of time. However, when used in conjunction with a comprehensive ulcer treatment regimen, antacids can prove invaluable.

4. Proton Pump Inhibitors:

Tiny pumps within acid-secreting cells can be shut down using proton pump inhibitors. These medications include both prescription drugs such as Nexium and over-the-counter medications such a Prilosec and Prevacid.

One additional benefit of proton pump inhibitors is that they can help heal esophageal tissue that has been damaged as the result of acid reflux. Prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors that are taken at high levels can increase the risk of hip fracture, so they should only be taken under your doctor’s close supervision.

Your treatment regimen may also include dietary modifications, such as avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, fatty foods, tobacco, and alcohol. Your physician may also suggest methods of reducing stress, which is also a major contributor to peptic ulcer condition.

As with all medical conditions, it is highly recommended that you contact a trained physician before attempting to self-diagnosis or treat your ulcer(s).

Because ulcers could indicate a serious underlying medical condition, immediate consultation is crucial to detecting potentially life-threatening illness.
