Houston Colon Health: Is Colon Cleansing beneficial?

Houston colon health is essential to maintaining optimum digestive performance. A colonic enema, often referred to as colonic cleansing and colonic irrigation, is believed by many to rid the gastrointestinal tract of toxins, thus strengthening the body’s immune system and boosting energy.

However, there is virtually no scientific evidence to support the claim that colon cleansing is beneficial; it can, in fact, cause serious bodily harm. Many gastrointestinal procedures require the colon to be irrigated in order for a cleaner view of the interior of the colon or large intestines, but the scientific community warns against recreational colon cleansing.

Colonic Enema Dangers:

  • Increased risk of dehydration
  • Potential infection from unclean equipment
  • Depletion of precious nutrients
  • Weakening of the colon walls
  • Bloating and indigestion
  • Dependence and damage to colon functionality
Colon cleansing is generally believed to be, at its most innocent, a waste of money. But physicians warn that the negative effects of frequent colon cleansing extend well-beyond your checkbook.

First of all, the colon knows how to do its job (absorbing needed nutrients and expelling waste) and should require no additional assistance. Colon irrigation that incorporates sodium phosphate can boost electrolytes, which can be especially dangerous to those with kidney or heart disease.

Many people suffering from chronic constipation falsely assume that a colonic enema will alleviate their condition. Unfortunately, dependence on enemas can develop, which has the potential to undermine the integrity of the colon.

As the result of enema or laxative dependence, the colon “forgets” how to function properly and might have to relearn muscle movement after the dependence has ended. There are much healthier alternatives to colon cleansing for people striving to overcome chronic constipation.

Constipation Treatments:
  • Consuming a diet rich in fiber
  • Supplemental fiber drinks, powders, etc.
  • Regular exercise
  • Consuming sufficient fluids (especially water)
  • Allowing adequate time for bowel movements
  • Laxatives (short-term and under doctor supervision)

As you can see, there are a variety of natural solutions to alleviating chronic constipation. A colonic enema should only be administered if you are undergoing a gastrointestinal procedure that requires a “clean” view of the interior of the colon or large intestines. Otherwise, there is virtually no good reason to consider irrigating your colon.
